No setting anywhere grants a citation. What a small site controls is the shape of its passages and its own server logs. What makes a paragraph cheap to quote, how to tell whether assistants are fetching your pages, and why a cited page can still show zero referrals.
There is no markup that gets a page into an AI Overview. Eligibility is ordinary indexing plus permission to show a snippet, which makes the question what to write rather than what to add.
A table row and a list item are already self-contained units, which is what makes them quotable away from the page. Both stop being quotable the moment a cell says "same as above". The construction rules, and the cases where a paragraph is the better shape.
Every line of a generated llms.txt is conditional on a field being set somewhere. A missing section is not a bug in the generator; it is a field nobody filled in, and the file is a short and free audit of which ones.
A mention with no hyperlink cannot appear in a referral report, because attribution needs a click that carries a referrer. The measurement that does work is a branded-query baseline in Search Console, taken before the mention runs.
An assistant quotes a passage, not a page. Docs that survive that treatment answer in the first sentence, restate their own subject, and name exact values instead of gesturing at them.
Markup does not persuade an answer engine to quote a page. It removes the guesswork about who wrote the page, when, for whom, and where it sits on the site.
A page can be named in an AI answer without ranking for the question, but the case is narrow: the assistant answered from its own weights instead of running a search. Retrieval produces a link. Memory produces a name with nothing behind it.
Each assistant arrives under its own name, obeys the rules written for that name, and takes away whatever the page contained at fetch time. Your own log is the only place all three can be compared.
